Meet the Need: Edward

Written by Elissa Romines

Edward lived and worked in a residential care home. He spent his days taking care of the elderly and people with disabilities. It's a physically demanding job-- we're talking getting full-grown humans in and out of the shower and helping them take care of business. As you can imagine, these duties (no pun intended) require a kind, patient, and caring person.

A person like Edward.

About a year ago, Edward got sick and was unable to keep up with the physical demands of his job. So he lost it. And because his job was also his home, he lost that, too. That's how Edward found himself homeless.

For a long time, Edward lived with a crack/cocaine addiction. Two months ago he managed to do something very rare: Edward got clean while still on the streets. And he has stayed clean.

Johnny and Edward.  If the face of Johnny Flores doesn't bring a smile to your own... You might want to check your pulse.

Johnny and Edward.
If the face of Johnny Flores doesn't bring a smile to your own... You might want to check your pulse.

Two weeks ago, Edward was diagnosed with colon cancer. He was hospitalized for a blockage in his colon and was unable to eat for a week while it cleared. This past week, he shared with us that he has dreams of getting well and staying on the "straight and narrow," and caring for other homeless people in the neighborhood. He also shared that he only has one remaining family member, his brother, and they aren't on good terms.

So what does Edward need the most?
A family. That's right. Meet the Need is going family style.
This means that more than anything money can buy, Edward needs you.
Hand-written notes. Encouraging cards. Thoughtful expressions of kindness.
