Our Advocacy Group has a simple vision: for individuals and their respective communities to be transformed. We believe one powerful way transformation can begin to take root is over a shared meal. We all come to the table with the same need: to be filled, both with food and conversation. In light of this belief, we recently decided to expand our quarterly Advocacy Group meetings to now include monthly opportunities to gather with our formerly homeless friends over a meal. Our first gathering was held at Brentwood Healthcare where Sam lives.
We brought Bubba's fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and biscuits. There was watermelon, Blue Bell ice cream, and cookies for dessert. The crew consisted of 7 adults, 1 toddler, and a special three-legged dog. Sam shared some of his life story with those who hadn't met him before. We watched the dog and toddler run around the lawn. Laughter and a warm breeze circled the picnic table. Sam took us on a tour of Brentwood, and people stopped to comment on how many visitors he had with him. We left with full stomachs and hearts, understanding that there is a hunger in us all to belong to a community. We are Sam's community, and Sam is ours.
