It's For Everyone - Alex

Alex first learned about The Human Impact when someone visited her high school to share about the organization’s work. What she heard that day gave language to something she had felt for a long time: people experiencing homelessness are too often overlooked, reduced to stereotypes, or treated as though they are solely defined by their circumstances.

She believed they deserved to be seen and heard. The Human Impact offered her a way to turn that belief into action.

“I have always had a heart for people experiencing homelessness,” Alex shared. “The Human Impact gave me the perfect avenue to transform my passionate beliefs into tangible actions.”

More than a year later, Alex—now a college student pursuing a future in healthcare—continues to participate in Community Prayer, Streets Time, and other opportunities to be part of life at The Human Impact. What has kept her coming back is not simply the work being done, but the people she has met and the unique atmosphere of honesty, compassion, and vulnerability she has found here.

“I believe true connection is made only in the presence of vulnerability and compassion,” she said. “That is why The Human Impact is so successful at its mission.”

Through conversations on the streets and time spent in community, Alex has become increasingly aware of the humanity we all share. Beneath the labels society places on people are individuals with the same desire to be known, heard, and connected to others.

She has also become more thoughtful about the language used to describe homelessness. When people are reduced to a circumstance, she explained, it becomes easier to overlook the full complexity of their lives. But when you begin to learn their histories, their struggles, their strengths, and their hopes, things change.

“The Human Impact has helped me understand homelessness with a more evolved approach,” she said. “Through compassion, humility, and awareness, it has shown me how powerful the acts of showing up, listening, and building relationships truly are.”

Listening has become especially important to Alex. After Streets Time, she often writes down the names of the people she met and a few details from the stories they shared. It is a simple practice that helps her remember each person and carry their stories with her.

One recent conversation has remained especially meaningful. Alex asked a new friend what it was like to experience homelessness and how he felt people treated him because of it. His honesty gave her a deeper understanding of the judgment and discrimination people without housing regularly encounter.

She was reminded that a person’s well-being can be shaped by countless factors—generational wealth or trauma, family support, personal circumstances, and access to resources. Many people are able to rely on comforts, possessions, and relationships that protect them during difficult seasons. Without those same safeguards, people experiencing homelessness are often judged for what they lack rather than valued for who they are. The conversation reinforced something Alex hopes to carry into her future work in healthcare: every person deserves to be treated with dignity.

She believes this work can be particularly transformative for young adults. Her generation longs for community, she said, even though many won’t admit their own loneliness, but instead rely on the artificial connections made through social media.

At the same time, she believes young adults are in a unique position to recognize loneliness and injustice, speak honestly about them, and help create something different.

“Being involved with The Human Impact encourages people my age to look beyond stereotypes, reduce the stigma around chronic homelessness, and become part of meaningful change in our communities.”

Her time with The Human Impact has also offered opportunities for Alex to experience the Kingdom of God in unexpected ways.

She sees it when people are loved and welcomed without having to prove themselves first. She sees it in the vulnerability shared during prayer, in advocates returning to the streets week after week, and in simple acts like listening closely, remembering a name, or recalling someone’s story.

“The Human Impact reminds me of the way Jesus moved toward people who were often overlooked by society. Not with judgment or distance, but with compassion, presence, and relationship,” she said. “This community reflects God’s heart by creating a space where people from different walks of life can come together, carry one another’s burdens, and remind each other that every person is valuable, known, and loved.”

That welcome has not only shaped the way Alex sees others. It has also carried her through a significant season of her own life.

She first arrived at The Human Impact during one of the biggest transitions she had ever experienced. From the beginning, she felt accepted exactly as she was.

“I never needed a résumé, a perfect explanation, or even a reason to show up,” she said. “All I had to do was come empty-handed with a full heart for people.” It has become a place where she knows she can show up authentically and be fully welcomed.

What began with a presentation at her high school has grown into friendships and experiences that are shaping her life.

“I am so grateful someone from The Human Impact came to my school that day,” Alex said. “It gave me the opportunity to be part of this work, to listen to people, and to make friendships that have changed my life forever.”

At The Human Impact, we say this work is for everyone—not because everyone arrives with the same story, but because everyone carries the same need to belong.

Alex came hoping to make sure others felt seen. Along the way, she discovered a community that sees her, too. And she’s learned that truly being seen allows all of us to move through this world more thoughtfully and compassionately.
